At the Fretz Park Library
August 11th, 12th and 13th
Once upon a time, in New York City, there was a regular gathering of literary wits, novelists, playwrights, essayists, journalists, publicists and humorists at the Algonquin Hotel restaurant. Their first lunch was in June, 1919, and the last in 1929. There has never been another comparable gathering of literary giants in American History. The regulars included such luminaries as Robert Sherwood, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Alexander Wollcott, Marc Connelly, Frank Adams, Edna Ferber, Margaret Leech and George S. Kaufman. They referred to themselves as “The “Vicious Circle.” The thought of such a group sipping cocktails while trading barbs and bon mots makes one giddy just to think of it. The Algonquin still stands at 59 W. 44th, near Times Square and one may request dining at the original Round Table.
Now, nearly 95 years later, several of the characters that populated that famous Round Table will be on stage at the Fretz Park Library. At least their writings will be there, performed by familiar Dallas actors, John S. Davies, Connie Coit, Gene Raye Price, Cliff Stevens and Marty Van Kleeck. Performances begin at 1:30 on August 11th and 12th at 1:30 and at 4:00 PM on Saturday, August 13th. The Saturday performance will also include a wine and cheese reception before the performance.
